This subject is really interesting. I really understand both of your point views. But in the end the answer is simple : you need to let the player choose. For exemple in Watch dogs and Dying light you can enable or disable invasion. And that's it. You want to get invade? Cool. You want to be alone? That's also possible. And this work also on game designed around this. For exemple the Dayz mod, where I've experienced the most grief in a video game, had servers with "friendly fire off". And it had even a karma system on the Origin Dayz mod. We could have a safe zone too in Sea of Thieves close the merchant's. But the design of Sea of Thieves is on point. Because in the end this is just all cosmetics, and you play this game to live an adventure. What matters is the journey not always the reward. This is why I love this game. Even if you loose everything, the quest and the friendship were lived and will be remembered =)
